Faris Scherwiz is the crossdressing captain of a pirate ship. Faris' first appearance in the game is in a cave where she and her crew apprehend Bartz, Galuf and Lenna as the three try to steal the pirates' ship. At this point, Faris is thought to be male. Though Faris' initial plan is to hold Lenna for ransom, Faris decides to help the three travelers to the Wind Shrine when she discovers that Lenna's pendant is identical to one that she possesses. She also reveals that her ship is pulled without wind by a water dragon called Syldra, a creature that Faris met after jumping into a whirlpool, and who Faris describes as being "like a sibling" since the two grew up together. She is in no small amount of distress when Syldra loses the fight against Karlabos and uses her last strength to rescue the party after the destruction of the Water Crystal.
